Is missed call text back worth it?
Missed call text back is worth paying for when new callers book with someone else because you didn't pick up, and you have open time to fill. If you're booked out, or most callers are existing clients who leave a message, a good voicemail greeting and a callback you keep to do the same job for nothing.
What is missed call text back?
It's a text that goes out on its own when you miss a call, something like "Sorry I missed you, I'm with a client. I'll call you back by 3, or book here." The caller knows you saw the call, so they're less likely to ring the next name on the list.
It doesn't answer the call and it doesn't book anyone. It buys you time until you can call back.
Can your phone already do it?
Not on its own, going by the makers' help pages as of 3 November 2026.
- Android (Google Pixel): Take a Message answers calls you miss or decline, plays a greeting and writes out what the caller said. Google says it's free. It doesn't text the caller.
- Google Voice: Google's help pages cover voicemail greetings, transcripts and forwarding, but describe no setting that texts a caller you missed.
- Apps on your phone: some Android apps send a text from your own number when a call is missed. The ones we found are small apps from little known developers, and they need permission to read your call log and send texts. We haven't tested any of them yet.
What does it cost in a business phone app?
These are the list prices on each company's own page on 3 November 2026. Check the page before you buy, because prices change.
| Option | Texts missed callers? | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Take a Message | No, it answers and transcribes | Free |
| Google Voice for Workspace, Starter | No setting described | $10 a user a month, plus a Google Workspace plan |
| Quo (was OpenPhone), Starter | Yes, auto replies to missed calls | $19 a user a month, or $15 billed yearly, plus texting registration |
| Jobber, Grow plan | Two way texting, no automatic missed call text described | $149 to $199 a month depending on billing |
What is 10DLC and do I need it?
10DLC is the US registration that business texting services require before texts from a normal ten digit number go out reliably. Texting services such as Quo say you'll need to register before you can text clients.
If you have no EIN, you can register as a sole proprietor. Twilio lists the fees as $4.50 once for the brand, $15 once for review and $2 a month for the campaign, with one phone number allowed. Quo lists a $19.50 one time review, then $1.50 to $3 a month depending on the type of registration. If your business has an EIN, you register as a business instead, not as a sole proprietor.
Texts you type yourself from your own phone are ordinary messages and generally don't need this.
When is it worth it?
- Most of your calls come from people who haven't booked with you before.
- You often hear "sorry, I've booked elsewhere" when you call back.
- You have open slots or jobs to fill, so a saved caller turns into real money. The missed call calculator puts a number on it.
When isn't it worth it?
- You're booked weeks out. A saved caller just joins the wait.
- Most callers are regulars who leave a message anyway.
- You'd pay for a whole phone system just to get the one feature.
Some callers find an automatic text cold, especially with something urgent. Keep the text short, human and honest about when you'll call.
The text to send
Missed call text for a practice
Missed call text for a trade
Only text people who called you, keep it about their call, and stop if they reply STOP.
How many callers go elsewhere?
Every number we could trace comes from a company that sells phone or answering tools, so treat them as a rough guide.
- In a 2025 CallRail survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business doesn't answer, and 21% said they call another business straight away.
- In 1,000 recorded calls to 94 US home service businesses, Service Direct found 66% were answered. The owners guessed 97%.
The figures you'll often see, like "85% of callers never call back", don't trace to any study we could find, so we don't use them. The calculator uses your own numbers instead.
Questions owners ask
Is missed call text back worth it?
It is worth it if new callers are booking with someone else because you didn't answer, and you have open time to fill. If you are booked out, or most of your callers are existing clients who leave a message, a clear voicemail greeting and a reliable callback do the same job for free.
Can my Android phone text people back automatically when I miss a call?
Not with the phone's own settings, as far as Google's help pages describe. Pixel's Take a Message answers a missed call and transcribes it, but it does not text the caller. Automatic texts need a separate app or a business phone service.
Does Google Voice send an automatic text when I miss a call?
Google's help pages for Google Voice describe voicemail greetings, transcripts and forwarding, but no setting that texts a caller you missed.
Do I need 10DLC registration for missed call texts?
Yes, if the texts go out through a business texting service on a regular ten digit number. Texting services such as Quo say you'll need to register before you text. Texts you type yourself from your own phone are generally ordinary person to person messages.
